The Friday (Re)Frame

Friday (Re)FRAME

Dear Reader,

It's Friday, and time to (re)frame.

A reframe can change how we see a situation and how we respond. Sometimes, it’s the difference between staying stuck and moving forward.

Reframing is a tool I use with coaching clients and practice daily because, quite frankly, the monkeys in my mind can wreak havoc. Maybe you know those loops of overthinking, worrying, or imagining the worst.

In 2024, I attended a retreat with Modern Elder Academy (MEA), facilitated by founder Chip Conley, a NYT bestselling author, hospitality entrepreneur, author, and speaker. This transformational experience helped catalyze my journey into leadership coaching.

This week, I listened to Chip's Midlife Chrysalis Podcast, where he discusses his new book, The Art of the Reframe, and how personal loss, cancer, and relationship changes shaped it.

His message echoes my approach with clients: reframing isn’t about denying what hurts or forcing a positive spin. It’s about making room for another perspective.

Here’s Chip's three-step process:

  1. Notice, feel, and track your emotions. This isn’t toxic positivity. Permit yourself to feel what’s there. Where do you notice it in your body? What will it take to release it?
  2. Separate the facts from the story. Ask: “What are the facts?” and “What story have I built around those facts?”
  3. Make room for other possibilities. Ask: “What else might be true about this?” Then write down three answers.

A client tried this with me this week and realized that what they assumed their boss thought might actually reflect their own self-judgment. The facts hadn’t changed. Another interpretation became possible.

As you head into the weekend, consider:

What’s one situation or recurring thought you’d like to reframe? What else might be true?

Monday Mojo Dear Reader, It's Monday, and I'm sending you BIG Monday Mojo Instead of a Friday fist bump, I’m sending you BIG Monday Mojo for a hopeful, courageous, energy-filled week. My Friday series, social media, and newsletter have been quiet for a couple of weeks. Since my father passed away on September 5, I’ve shifted my work into a lower gear. When we are facing hard things, it is important to take the time we need to process and heal in the way that serves us best. I wrote about my...

Quick Note Tobi's sister, Lauri Brown, a powerlifter and respiratory therapist, flexes her muscles literally in competitions and figuratively in the hospital, saving patients. Dear Reader, It's Friday, and you flexed your talents this week! Most Fridays, we are so anxious to get to Saturday that we don't stop and reflect on the ways that we "flexed" during the week. Whether it was your talents, strength, relationships, skills, communication, influence, or leadership, I'm sure you flexed in an...
